Star Wars production executive Gareth Wigan has died at the age of 78.

London-born Wigan, who was credited with helping the success of blockbuster films such as Star Wars, Chariots of Fire and Alien, passed away after a brief illness at his Los Angeles home yesterday.

He is survived by wife Pat Newcomb, four children and seven grandchildren.

The Oxford graduate began his career as an agent in the UK in the late 1950s and a decade later formed the own agency Gregson & Wigan Ltd with partner Richard Gregson, which became the first UK agency to open offices in Los Angeles and New York.
