The Stuff of Heroes: Chalon Ko

Posted by: Gabriel Santos

Far in the untamed regions of Wild Space, a small shuttle flies through space towards a bright blue planet. Within it, a Jedi Knight and her padawan sit in awkward silence. The Jedi is a young, beautiful woman dressed in a dark blue robe with snow-white skin that contrasts beautifully against her sparkling eyes and jet-black hair. She looks over towards her young padawan and sighs. She is annoyed by the seriousness of the youngling and tries to blow hair away from her face to try and get his attention. The young padawan, who was dressed in a red long sleeved shirt and black pants, paid no attention. He instead turned his face towards the black cockpit window and stared at his reflection. It was that of a young boy with no smile. He could see his wavy black hair covering the top part of his eyes and thought only that he could use a hat of some kind.

“What are you looking at, Chalon?” asked the Jedi in a her soft voice. The padawan did not reply and looked down at the controls.

“Okay,” she said to herself. “It looks like we should be arriving soon to the planet. How about we call in for clearance?”

The Jedi stared at her padawan for any response. She grew excited as she saw his hand begin to move, but was disappointed as she realized he only was going to scratch his nose. She lowered her head and pushed the button herself.

“Control, this is Jedi Knight, Zilan Fa, requesting landing clearance, over,” she released the button and waited for a response.

“Roger, Zilan Fa. This is temple control, you are cleared for landing,” said a static voice over the intercom. Zilan Fa smiled and commenced landing procedures for the ship. She looked over to her padawan. He stared back at her with a bored look upon his face that made Zilan Fa sigh deeply into the air.

As she shook her head, she controlled their ship into the atmosphere of the planet below them. Within minutes, the planet’s surface came into full view. It was beautiful sight behold, with gigantic mountains covered in a deep green layer of grass and many trees with pink leaves scattered throughout the landscape. Cutting through the mountains were wide rivers filled with water that seemed to sparkle like sapphires in the sun’s light.

Zilan Fa glanced over towards Chalon Ko and could see that his eyes had brightened up from the view. She could not help but smile. Soon, a light mist filled the air around them and the sound of many waterfalls filled the air.

“We’re almost there,” said the Jedi softly. Chalon Ko looked to his master with a puzzled look. All he could see through the cockpit was a deep canyon filled with a heavy mist and waterfalls emptying into it from all sides.

After pressing a few buttons, the ship began to descend into the mist below. The once blue sky was now gray as the light filtered through the heavy mist. As Chalon Ko looked out further, he could now see many small lights appearing through the clouds and growing larger as they neared whatever it was they landing on. Before he know it, the ship rocked as it hit the ground with a loud thud. His master got up with surprising speed and ran to the exit of the ship.

“Padawan, come on! Let’s go!” she said as she waved for him to follow. The padawan quickly got up from his seat and dashed to catch up to his master.

Upon exiting the ship, Chalon Ko noticed the haze was still to thick to see anything clearly, but beyond it, he could make the shape of what seemed to be some kind of large building. He looked to his master and could see her smiling the biggest smile he has ever seen on her. She moved closer to him and put her hand on his shoulder. Zilan Fa leaned in closer to her padawan and spoke softly to him.

“Watch this,” she said as she waved her hand through the air. As if obeying her command, the mist parted and revealed a magnificent stone temple rising into the sky before them. It had many towers with pointed roofs that sloped downward and out. The main building was large and had a single square doorway leading into it. Looking down, Chalon Ko noticed that the whole building was suspended over a huge lake with many gigantic black chains connected to the sides of the surrounding mountains. The only way onto the floating platform was a series of red bridges that spanned across the lake.

Chalon Ko was in awe at the building before him and had on his face was appeared to be the beginnings of a smile. Zilan Fa seemed proud of herself and pointed up towards the highest tower of the temple.

“Chalon Ko, welcome to the Tailen Temple.”

The Stuff of Heroes: Mathan Gu-Hit, part 2

Across the fields of Cordova, the morning sun filled the land with its golden light. Above, the empty sky was painted brilliantly with streaks of orange, yellow, and red. The silence of the night was soon broken as the songbirds awoke and filled the air with their morning songs. Far off from the city, amongst the high cliffs that looked down upon the fields, a young man sits alone gazing upon the beauty of the dawn. He breathes the brisk night air in and looks up towards the sky. The young man smiles as he begins to dream of the worlds beyond his own.

As the young man is lost in fantasy, he does not notice the sound of footsteps made by a young girl approaching from behind. She sneaks up close behind the young man and stops. A large smile appears on her face as she jumps forwards to surprise the young man.

“Mathan! Wake up!” she screams. The sound of her voice shocks the young Mathan and nearly causes him to slip off the cliff. He turns quickly to find young girl smiling and waving at him.

“Jolee! What was that for? I almost fell of the edge,” asks Mathan.

“You were day dreaming again, Baba,” laughs Jolee as she sits down next to Mathan on the cliff’s edge. She begins to look out onto the glowing fields below and then sighs. “I can sure see why, though. Everything is just so beautiful from up here.”

Mathan looks back at Jolee and smiles. He looks at her and sees that her skin and hair seem to be glowing as the sunlight and wind catch her face.

“It sure is,” he says softly. Jolee turns back to Mathan and their eyes meet. The sight of her brown eyes in the glow of the sun makes the young boy blush and he quickly turns away back towards the horizon. Jolee notices his embarrassment and laughs quietly.

“How come you are always up here?” she asks.

“How come?” repeats Mathan. He thinks about the question for second and then lays down on the ground to see the sky above him. “I come here because it’s the closet place to the sky.”

Jolee lies down beside Mathan and looks up at the sky as well. “You’re really serious about going off-world some day aren’t you?”

“Yeah, I really am,” he answers, “Ever since we were kids, I’ve always had this dream of flying out into the stars to see everything this galaxy has. There are so many worlds out there, worlds we can’t even imagine.”

Jolee turns her to Mathan, “Well, what’s wrong with this one?”

“Nothing,” he says as he turns to her, “Its just . . .”

“Just what?”

“Just . . . nothing.” He smiles at Jolee and gets up quickly off the ground. “It’s just a boy’s dream and besides, who’s going to give me a ship.” Mathan turns and extends his hand out to Jolee. She grabs it and is pulled up from the ground. She sees the smile on his face and decides to smile back.

“Okay, lets get back into town then,” says Jolee as she starts to walk down the path off the cliffs. Still holding her hand, Mathan gets pulled along with her as they travel back into their small town.

As they continue past the cliffs into the fields, a feeling like a small shock suddenly hits Mathan. He stops and lets go of Jolee’s hand. Mathan quickly turns around and from out of nowhere a large bang rumbles through the fields. The rumbling is then followed by a huge gust of wind that blows past the two. Surprised by the sudden events, Jolee looks back at Mathan and is shocked by what she sees. Far off into the horizon, a column of black smoke rises into the air from a fire burning through a patch of grass. In its center is a small black ship that only moments ago plummeted into the ground.

Mathan stands frozen with his eyes wide and locked onto the burning craft. He knew he had sensed the crash coming and turned in time to see the entire landing. Fearing him hurt, Jolee runs up behind him to check if he’s okay.

“Did you see that? I think a space craft just crashed,” she yells with shock in her voice. “Mathan, I think we should go get help.” Jolee looks up to find that the sight before them is entrancing her friend. She pulls at his arm to get his attention, but to no avail. She tries to call him name again, but is suddenly interrupted by Mathan.

“Did you hear that?” he asks, “I can hear someone calling for help?”

“Help? Mathan that things is like a mile away, there’s no we could be hearing anything! Now come on!” she again tries to pull Mathan with her, but again he wouldn’t budge. He instead begins to walk forward and starts pulling Jolee with him.

“No, Jolee. I can hear him. There’s someone there and he’s calling for help!” With a great burst of speed, Mathan breaks free of Jolee’s grasps and blasts forward towards the burning wreck. His speed is so quick that Jolee has no time to react and is left standing in the field.

“Mathan, where are you going? Mathan!” she screams with all her might. Panicking, she decides there is nothing left to do, but to run for help. She stops for a second to look for Mathan and sees him still running towards the ship. Tears begin to roll down her face as she races back for help.

All the while Mathan sprints forward at full speed. His heart begins to race as he nears the source of the smoke. Without realizing, his speed increasing dramatically and within seconds he reaches the crash site. He stops before the flames and begins to scan the area. He can see all around many small fires blazing through the golden grasses. Within the middle of blaze, is a small, black triangular shaped ship sitting on its side. Mathan tries to see past the smoke into the cockpit, but the black cloud is too thick. He attempts to move closer, but the heat holds him back. Suddenly, he hears what sounds to be a loud roar come from within the cockpit.

“Guess I have no choice then,” he says to himself as he looks around for any people that might be nearby. After seeing that there is no one else, Mathan closes his eyes and begins to concentrate on a power that hides within him. A power that he’s had for as long as he can remember. A power called the Force.

As he tries to focus on the energy around him, he brings his hands up to his chest and inhales deeply. Mathan can begin to feel the strain on his body as he focuses almost everything he has into his hands. Just as it starts to become too much, he opens his eyes and releases the Force energy in all directions. The power of the blast sends shockwaves through the air and is great enough that all the nearby fires are extinguished. Mathan falls to one knee and gasps for air. He has never before tried to do anything like what he had just done and the effort left him feeling drained. Remembering the cry for help, he forces his body up and makes his way to the now exposed cockpit. Inside, he can see a form start to move. Raising his hand, Mathan uses the Force and pries the cockpit open. He excitedly runs up to it and is overpowered by what he finds. Sitting unconscious within the cockpit was a large furry alien. Mathan knew immediately what it was and could not believe his eyes. There before him was a Wookiee and not just any Wookiee, for Mathan could see the insignia branded on his belt. He knew he had just saved the life of a Jedi Knight.

A few hours had passed since the battle with the droids and night had fallen once again on the Fire Plains. Back near the entrance of the Ipo’s cavern, the Jedi and clones had set up camp and were resting from the day’s excitement. Gabrall, Mathan, and Gadina were resting near a small fire and were conversing with each other about what do next with their situation. As they spoke, P24 rolled up next to Gadina and gently nudged her in the back.

“Hey P24. What’s up?” she asked the small droid. P24 whistled quietly and then turned his dome in the direction of a large hill. There atop the hill was Melandi. She stood alone as she stared out into the distance towards the remains of Dastra.

It was a sunny day on the planet of Cordova. On its many plains, the soft winds brushed the fields as they shined in the morning dew. Easily seen from above, a small farming town seemingly emerged from the golden sea of plants. It was not a spectacular town, filled mostly with family farms, small shops, and only a few large buildings. On the outskirts, they had a small landing area for ships to load their crops and be sent elsewhere across the planet.

Deep in the grounds of the Jedi temple, a clan of younglings had gathered before a large door and were waiting patiently for their minder to finish counting them. They were all very excited for today they were going on a trip through the Jedi Temple gardens.

Standing near the center of the group, were four younglings eagerly chatting away about the prospects of their trip. One of the younglings, a human male, looked up at the large door and spoke out loud to the group, “Did you guys know that the greenhouse ceiling has artificial sun lamps covered by a special fabric in order to imitate a natural changing sky?”

Far in the darkness of the Outer Rim, a small ship floats silently through space. Inside the cockpit, a dim, blue light illuminates the room. Sitting in the pilot’s seat, a lone Jedi stares quietly at the computer screen. On it are the faces of ten people, three of which the Jedi recognizes. Leaning back in his chair, he smiles slightly and runs his hand through his hair. He reaches forward and touches the screen. The faces scroll up out of view and a page of information appears. The Jedi carefully scans the document and then suddenly stops at one sentence. He sits up straight in his chair and begins to mouth the words of the sentence. “The members of mysterious Black Tears group are thought to reside on the planet Dathomir in the Quelii sector.”

Night had fallen upon the plains of Ilo. Above, the usually starlit sky was now colored black from the smoke rising from the burning city. Gathered around a small fire were the five Jedi, Hisoler, and P24. The rest of the clones had been sent down into the cave to assist the Ipo. Standing nearest the fire was Gabrall. He was facing the others as he explained the predicament of the Ipo.

“We have to help them,” he said softly, “I made a promise.” Gabrall turned to stare into the orange flame.

In a cantina on a far off planet, the atmosphere was loud and bustling with life. There were species from all across the galaxy gathered and conversing with one another. Suddenly, the lights in the room dimmed and the cantina grew quiet. Two spotlights flashed and pointed towards a small stage at the back of the building. All the patrons in the room turned and focused their attention on the stage. A loud beat started to blast over the speakers and filled the room. The crowd grew loud as they started to cheer. From behind the curtains, a beautiful, young woman had walked up on stage and struck a pose. The young woman’s face was flawless and her sapphire hair was done in a wild fashion. She was dressed in a silver bikini top and short red skirt. Her body was slender and toned befitting that of dancer. The crowd knew that on stage stood a Theelin Diva.

Gabrall stood in awe at the grandeur of the cavern before him. It was a gigantic room that extended at least 5 miles back with a ceiling that rose 50 feet into the air. Strange glowing crystals grew down from the ceiling in all directions and filled the room with a soft, warm light. On the ground, there were hundreds of small huts from which the hiding Ipo were now emerging. From a group of Ipo near the entrance of the cave, an older looking man began to approach the Jedi. The Ipo looked older in years, but the Jedi could sense an incredibly strong presence from him. As the man neared, Gabrall could see the exhaustion in his face. His eyes were sunken and dark and their fabled blue glow was faded and dull. Gabrall bowed his head slightly and went to meet the man.

The sun was now setting behind Dastra. Boz Elysa stood proud on the balcony of the small base as she stared out into the distance. The once clear sky was now thick with smoke. Below, the city of Dastra no longer shone blue, but now glowed orange from the flames that engulfed the city. It seemed to now blend into the Fire Plains to form a brilliant orange firestorm amidst the backdrop of the setting sun. The great city of art was now gone. Its ashes flew in the howling winds. The Hall of the Seven Winds seemed to scream in agony as they blew through the fallen structure. It sounded as if Inspiration itself was no longer whispering, but crying with the entire might of its voice.

In the Jedi Temple, younglings learn the many skills that are necessary of a Jedi. They are trained in the ways of combat, negotiating, healing, and most importantly the Force. In one of the many training rooms, a class gathers to do just that.

They begin to enter the large circular room and sit around in a small circle in the center of the room. Their voices echo in the high ceilings as they socialize with their friends. The large doors on the other side of the room open and the younglings fall silent. Standing in the doorway is a female Twi’lek Jedi. She was wearing a tight brown vest and black pants that contrasted heavily with her deep red skin. On her head, she wore a black headdress that wrapped her lekku. As with most Twi’leks, her face was a beautiful sight that seemed to transfix the students in the room.

A loud boom sounded through the Ilo sky. A Jedi medical cruiser was now descending upon the remains of the crashed Halbert. On the ground, clone troopers were setting up camp and scanning the horizon for any sign of oncoming attack. The wind on the ground began to pickup as the ship grew closer to the ground. Upon hearing the noise, Gabrall, Hisoler, and Mathan emerged from the wreckage and were now looking at the descending ship.

All was quiet in the skies of Bespin. Far in the horizon, the evening sun glowed a blazing orange. The endless clouds swirled quietly in the wind. A herd of velkers flew through the orange gas and headed towards a large shadow hidden in the clouds. As they broke through the clouds, the figure was revealed in the evening light. It was large floating platform with a single tower in its center. The tower was a sight to behold with its silver walls and green-shingled roofing at each level that flared out at the bottom. Around the tower, there was a beautiful garden filled with trees of pink leaves and winding sand paths. The velkers and other creatures of Bespin flew around the tower and filled the platform with life.

I hate Alderaan. It’s just so clean. It’s nothing like the grime and grit of Nar Shaddaa, the smell of the undercity and glow of the cities lights. Now that’s my kind of town. Can’t even try to compare it to this world of nerf herders. I don’t why I ended up here. I guess its all just part of the job. I’m a bounty hunter you see. The name’s Andur. I kill for cash.

The CIS base was chaos as it prepared for the return of Boz Elysa. All round, droids scattered and hid to avoid the wrath of the Neimoidian. Three green painted tactical droids stood in the center of the command room arguing about which should face Boz. “Whose idea was it to tell the Mistress that there was a Republic shuttle heading towards this planet,” cried GEE-C43. “I think it was that droid,” said GEE-C45 as he pointed to a battle droid standing near the counsel. The battle droid looked up and pointed at himself, “What? No . . . I didn’t tell her . . . I don’t even know what . . . ahhhhh!” The battle droid raised both his arms into the air and ran towards the doors.

On the plains, the Separatist force lay in wait. Their hundreds of droids walked the field. A dozen tanks hovered around the perimeter of their camp. At the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, the Council Chambers were dark. A faint blue light filled the room and the shadows of the twelve masters flickered on the walls. Night had fallen on the planet’s surface. The air was cool and Dastra glowed a soft blue as the moon reflected off the buildings. Unaware of the approaching invasion, the Ipo, having evolved past the need for sleep, continued on with their nightly rituals within the city. The streets of Dastra were filled with people, their eyes glowing like brilliant sapphire stars. All around, the sounds of writers and poets musing about their latest works could be heard. To the east, the air was filled with the melodies and lyrics of musicians practicing and sharing their gift. In the center of the city, the Hall of Inspiration was filled with young students meditating in silence amongst the crystal gardens, all waiting for Inspiration to find them and reveal to them the path by which they would express and translate the it’s whispers. In the most northern part of the city, a large crowd had gathered in the Hall of Seven Winds, a grand white stone building that was built in such a way that it sung whenever the winds blew. The Hall had served as a grand stage for the best of Ilo’s artists. There they could reveal what Inspiration had whispered to them in a magnificent display of beauty. On this night, two of Ilo’s greatest were about to premiere their latest masterpiece.
